"I recently completed an official form for the first time! This is a great achievement for me and something which I would never have attempted before!"
The Dyslexia Treatment Centre was set up to prove that children, teenagers and grown-ups suffering from dyslexia, dyspraxia or ADHD, can be given help - with time and unterstanding - to improve their learning and behavioural patterns.
Many of our students have never been officially diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia or attention disorder but they know - and their partent know - that they are not "realising their potential." By dedicating only 30 minutes each day for a few months, their life can be totally transformed!
The first thing we do is to listen. We take a detailed personal history of the specific problems, whether the student has been diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia or ADHD or not.
As no two dyslexics are the same (each dyslexic has an individual learning profile for spelling reading, sequencing and writing) we will take our time in finding the correct learning profile. Some learn best through listening and repeating to themselves, others through watching, and others by doing.
Once a learning profile has been established, a programme of mental and physical exercises is compiled. This is tailored to enhance the strengths of the learning pattern and to counteract its weaknesses.
We also take into account any non-useful beliefs ("I can’t") or other emotional blocks like anger and frustration and develop a series of mental exercises which involve non-verbal ideation or visual processing. These are often performed more successfully than any average student.
The length of a dyslexia treatment depends on the level of severity of the student’s symptoms, be it dyslexia, dyspraxia or ADHD. However, we have found that it takes anywhere between six and twelve months (for the most severe students) to come completion. Visits at the centre would be on average every fortnight. The schedule may change depending on the prescribed programme and on the results of the assessments we do at every visit.
For certain conditions we may recommend a change in diet from our nutritionist and or from a medical herbalist.
Children often say when they come to us for a treatment: "I wish school could be this much fun."
